To a stirred solution of compound 1
1-Cyanocyclopropanecarboxylic acid ethyl ester(2.35 g, 16.9 mmol) in methanol (25 mL), was added 10% Pd on C (25 mg) and the reaction mixture was stirred under hydrogen atmosphere (balloon) at room temperature. On completion of the reaction as indicated by TLC, the mixture was filtered through a celite pad and the filtrate concentrated to yield the title product 1-Aminomethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid ethyl esteras a colorless liquid (2.25 g, yield 93%);

1H NMR (DMSO-d6, 300 MHz):
δ 0.8– 0.88 (m, 2H, 2 × CH c-propyl),
1.0–1.07 (m, 2H, 2 × CH c-propyl),
1.16 (t, J = 7.1 Hz, 3H, CH3CH2O-),
2.65 (s, 2H, CH2NH2-methylene),
4.05 (q, J = 7.1 Hz, 2H, CH3CH2O-);

MS (CI): 144.1 (M+1, 100%);

Elemental Analysis found: C, 58.51; H, 9.29; N, 9.64 C7H13NO2 Requires C, 58.72; H, 9.15; N, 9.78.
